In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
