Senate Passes Bill to Disclose Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will force the release of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

“The American people have been patient long enough. Those affected have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

This legislation next will be sent to the president for his approval. The president stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though Trump has for months downplayed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the legislation over the past few days, and announced he would sign the measure if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were watching from a viewing area, applauded after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he worried the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
