A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
