Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
